How To Disrupt Security Cameras

Last updated: January 5, 2024

In 2019, there were an estimated 1,117,696 burglaries in the United States. Some of these break-ins can be attributed to the failure of security cameras, as malicious individuals take measures to disrupt and disable these home systems.

Highly effective methods of disrupting security cameras include using a signal jammer, blocking the camera’s view with something, clipping wires, or physically destroying the camera in some way.

Using a signal jammer

For wireless camera systems, a signal jammer that cuts off the wifi signal can prevent your home security system from functioning effectively. Hackers can use gadgets to send false signals or block wifi systems, and they can be relatively simple to obtain. However, they are illegal to sell, distribute, and import in the United States.

To counter against this, wired security cameras tend to be more secure than their wireless counterparts. On the other hand, any visible wires can make them easier to tamper with. For wireless security cameras, having a private wifi network can help keep your system protected.

Blocking the view

An easy method to prevent security cameras from working properly is to block their view. For instance, a well-placed tree, piece of dark fabric, paint, or object, can obscure a camera’s ability to record any break-ins and burglaries. The good news is that motion detection systems and using cameras from different angles can usually counter against this.

Using a recessed door alarm sensor can also provide added protection against unwanted guests.

Cutting wires

Finally, broken cords can prevent security cameras from successfully transmitting signals. Having a backup system or alternate connection in place can prevent your cameras from being ineffective. Some companies also send alerts if there are power outages in your area.
