Which Component Of Physical Security Addresses Outer-Level Access Control?

Physical security measures protect your property and assets against intruders or natural conditions like fire, flood, humidity, etc. It has multiple levels of protection: the outer parameter, the inner parameter, and the interior of the building.

 

The perimeter component of physical security addresses the outer level access control. Perimeter security is the first stage of intrusion security. It is a proactive system that detects breaches or intrusion before anything else and triggers an alarm. Outer-level access control permits or denies a person access to a certain space or asset. 

 

Perimeter security includes natural access control and territorial reinforcement. 

Natural Access Control

Landscaping and building features are utilized to guide people from entering or exiting the property. Criminals usually find a low risk of intrusion if they sense that they can move easily without notice. 

 

Natural access control interferes with the lowered sense of risk and deters their willingness to access the property. It also eliminates every possible escape route. 

Territorial Reinforcement 

Territorial reinforcement is the distinction between private and public property to prevent unauthorized access. It provides an authorized person a sense of dominion. Territorial reinforcement’s goal is also to keep the perimeter secure and intruders off of your property. 

 

Some perimeter security measures are barbed wire fences, walls, gates protected with armed guards, vehicle and pedestrian barriers, etc. Whereas measures like locks, keys, electronic visitor management systems, video detection, external alarms, etc., are used for the inner perimeter. 

 

Therefore, work out and decide whether your building requires perimeter access control. Conduct a security risk assessment and increase the outer level access control of your place.
